Work-based learning for young people – Visual Roots and Creative Apprenticeships
Visual Roots is an engage initiative offering visual arts venues the opportunity to develop accredited work placements for vulnerable and hard-to-reach young people. This area group meeting will provide an overview of the Visual Roots programme and present a case study from Cornerhouse, Manchester.
Another new initiative of work-based learning are Creative Apprenticeships, a mix of on the job and off job training where young people have the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge and attain qualifications while doing so. A brief overview of Creative Apprenticeships combined with a case study from Tate Liverpool will give an insight into the theory and practice of this learning path.
A Visual Roots volunteer at Cornerhouse and apprentices at Tate Liverpool will share their experiences of taking part in work-based learning programmes.

Extend Leadership Programme: applications invited

Applications are invited from colleagues working in education and learning roles in the arts to participate in the Extend Leadership Programme. Comprising a tailor-made programme of residentials, placements, mentoring and peer networking, Extend aims to give participants the confidence and skills to achieve a greater degree of leadership in the future. This could be through gaining a leadership position or by achievements that raise the status of the profession as a whole.

The programme is led by engage, with a cross-artform Steering Group comprising senior staff with a background in education and learning in the arts who work within organisations with a strong commitment to that area.

Extend will support up to 12 mid-career colleagues working in education and learning roles in the arts. Applicants may apply from England, Scotland and Wales. England and Scotland applicants may work in any art form, applicants from Wales should work in the visual arts.

Applications are open to mid-career professionals (either employed or self employed) who:

* Have experience working in the arts sector in an education and learning role
* Are resident in England, Wales or Scotland
* Are able to commit fully to each element of the programme
* If employed, can provide evidence that their employer is committed to their participation in the programme

Full details of the programme, costs and how to apply can be downloaded from the engage homepage. If you would like further information about Extend, please feel free to contact the Extend Programme Manager, Dawn Cameron on 07753 748038, extend@engage.org.

Extend is part of the Cultural Leadership Programme and is funded through the Meeting the Challenge Development Programme. The Cultural Leadership Programme is delivered by Arts Council England, Museum Libraries and Archive Partnership, and Creative and Cultural Skills. Four places on the programme have been made available through the support of the Scottish Arts Council.

Climate Change and the Visual Arts- presentations and MP3s now online

A curatorial development and networking event organised by engage and VAGA in August 2009, Climate Change and the Visual Arts offered a range of perspectives on the environmental impact of presenting contemporary visual art, from curatorial practice, gallery education, exhibition making and artist practice and allowed space to discuss whether concerns over climate change affect the sector's working practices. You can download some presentations and MP3s from the day at http://www.engage.org/scotland/vaga.aspx

engage South West Area Group - Visual Roots Dissemination event

2-6pm Thursday 11 March 2010
Venue: Arnolfini Bristol

Since New Labour came to power in 1997 there has been a flurry of government funding for vulnerable and hard to reach young people and the arts (Creative Partnerships, Arts Award and so on). In recent years arts institutions in the UK have been funded to set up youth projects. We propose taking time to reflect on these initiatives in order question government agendas and the impact these youth initiatives have on the institutions hosting them.

The discussion will be illustrated by presentations from:
Young Arnolfini Artists Collective
Tate St Ives enquire project exploring delivering the Creative and Media diploma
Plymouth Arts Centre’s YPAC will discuss their involvement with the programme.
Frances Bossom will discuss Arnolfini’s work experience model of good practice.

Refreshments will be provided.
The event is free but booking advisable, to book please contact helen.davies@arnolfini.org.uk
