engage promotes access to, enjoyment and understanding of the visual arts through 'gallery education' - projects and programmes which help schoolchildren and the wider community become confident in their understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts and galleries.

engage supports gallery education through:

engage provides training opportunities to promote good practice, and helps practitioners pursue careers in gallery education.

Current professional development provision includes:

Projects and Programmes

  • Interpretations, engage Scotland programme investigating the role of interpretation in breaking down barriers to access to contemporary visual art.
  • envision, supporting galleries to develop innovative ways of working with young people aged 14-21.
  • enquire, research programme involving partnerships between galleries, schools and higher education institutions.
  • Watch this Space, training and professional development for teachers and gallery educators with the aim of developing new links, skills and knowledge.
engage also runs projects in partnership with other organisations designed to broaden access to the arts. These include:
  • Explore, in association with Shape. Eight galleries in England and Wales focusing on disabled and deaf people as audiences, participants and artists.
  • Museums and Galleries Month, in association with the Campaign for Museums. A series of seminars and toolkit on using artists within Museum and Heritage contexts.

Advocacy

engage works in advocacy to build wider recognition of the potential of gallery education, and to influence policies and resourcing. engage is currently working with Skillset, Creative and Cultural Skills and with Ofsted. Past advocacy work includes:
