Save the date: engage/enquire International Conference 2011

The annual engage International Conference brings together gallery educators, artists, teachers, academics and curators from all over the world. This year engage will again collaborate with enquire to deliver the conference, which will take place in Margate, Kent from 14-16 November.
The proposed theme is 'The role of artists in gallery education and how artists' practice can provide opportunities for democratic participation'. We will explore the theme through a lively programme of talks, presentations and workshops. There will be exchange and debate, and plenty of opportunities to network and socialise with colleagues. engage is recruiting for a Programmer to work with us on this event. More...

Wolf Report Published

Last year the Secretary of State for Education commissioned Professor Alison Wolf of King's College London to carry out an independent review of vocational education, and consider how vocational education for 14- to 19-year-olds can be improved. The resulting report has now been published. The report recommends a 20% cap on the amount of time young people spend on vocational learning: this could lead to a greater emphasis on academic courses for young people in schools and further education. VIRE - VAGA International Research Enquiry

A new survey aimed at curators and those working curatorially within any framework (projects, exhibitions, collections, academic, artist practice, gallery education) across the UK has been launched with the aim of investigating existing curatorial work in an international context. The survey forms a key part of the data collection for a year long research project VIRE (VAGA International Research Enquiry), that aims to support curatorial development by identifying opportunities to promote exchanges, foster partnerships and develop programmes in the future. Applications invited for engage International Summer School 2011

New Galleries, New Audiences
21-24 June, Slovenia
engage International Summer School is for experienced gallery educators, artists, curators and academics. This year's engage Summer School will be hosted by Moderna galerija in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Delegates will visit venues and art spaces in Ljubljana and Zagreb, Croatia, meeting colleagues and hearing about gallery education practice, as well as seeing new venues. A keynote speaker will stimulate debate, and other sessions will be devised and facilitated by members of the group.

New opportunities for young people to work in culture

A new skills training project,
'Strengthening Our Common Life' is offering 12 paid placements in top cultural organisations in London, Bristol and Portsmouth. The 10 project partners include Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives, Southbank Centre, King's College London and Historic Royal Palaces. Placements offer a rich variety of skills and experiences that enable trainees to gain a Diploma in Cultural Heritage (QCF Level 3) and help them pursue a future career in heritage. Placements are 9-18 months long, with each trainee receiving a bursary of £13,500 gross per annum More...


Knowledge Lives Everywhere launch

Knowledge Lives Everywhere is an exhibition celebrating and showcasing the work of FACT's unique community, schools and young people's programmes. It features interactive artworks, architectural installation and photography produced by community in collaboration with artists.

A consultation has been set up to help determine how they develop future qualifications and rationalise existing qualifications to ensure that they meet the skills needs of the sector. EU Youth in Action programme

Public and not-for-profit organisations active in the field of youth services are invited to apply for projects promoting cooperation in the youth sector with eligible partner countries other than the neighbouring countries of the European Union (Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Asia, etc). Grants of up to £100,000 are available.
Preference will be given to those projects which best reflect the permanent priorities of the Youth in Action programme:
- The participation of young people
- Cultural diversity
- European citizenship
- Inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. More...

Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign

'We are more' (2010-2013) is a Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign set up by Culture Action Europe in strategic partnership with the European Cultural Foundation. It has been launched to influence the EU budget negotiations for the 2014-2020 period, which will take place over the next two years. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of European societies. More...

HLF Heritage Grants Scheme

Heritage Grants Scheme funding of is available for projects of £1million-£5million that relate to the national, regional or local heritage of the UK. To be eligible for funding a project must:
- Help people to learn about their own and other people's heritage
- Conserve the UK's diverse heritage for present and future generations to experience and enjoy
- Help more people, and a wider range of people, to take an active part in and make decisions about heritage. More...

The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation has announced that funding is available to local and national charities or not-for-profit organisations that address rural and urban deprivation. Tudor is an independent grant-making trust which funds organisations working across the UK. It aims to help smaller, under-resourced organisations that offer direct services and these groups do not have to be registered charities.
There is no maximum or minimum grant amount. Grants can take the form of core funding (including salaries and running costs), development funding, project grants or capital grants for buildings or equipment and are usually made over one, two or three years. More...


The LankellyChase Foundation

The LankellyChase Foundation is seeking applications from registered charities to support summer playschemes for children between the ages of 5 and 17 years. In 2011 the Foundation will be supporting specific activities for children and young people living in refuges for families escaping domestic violence; or for young carers. This year the Foundation will be making approximately 120 grants of around £500, and preference will be given to applications from organisations affiliated to a relevant nationally recognised body and adhering to national standards of practice. East London Business Alliance Transformers Grant scheme

The East London Business Alliance has received funding from the Olympic Lottery Distributor for local groups to be able to develop projects which will help to inspire and excite people about the London 2012 Games, raising the spirits and aspirations of local people. Transformers funded projects should have positive outcomes and ideally, a lasting legacy. Working with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities

PAMIS is an organisation based in Scotland that provides support for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), their family and paid carers. They are working with Project Ability and Trongate 103 on their Everyone project, which is looking at improving access for people with PMLD to Trongate 103 and the arts venues within it. As part of this project PAMIS are delivering a training session that is open to staff from other arts organisations that feel they could benefit from this opportunity.

Visual Arts and Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence has opened the door more formally to artists and cultural organisations to engage creatively in learning and projects with schools. This seminar is designed to support visual artists, gallery educators and others working within schools and with pupils.
The day will be of particular interest to those who are relatively new to working with Curriculum for Excellence, but will also be a useful refresher for those who are more experienced.
