Information for Galleries, Museums and other organisations running events

engage is delighted to be managing Children's Art Day this year with funding from the Clore Duffield Foundation, the Mayor of London, and Kids Love London - part of Visit London. Children's Art Day takes place during Shine week - a national schools festival celebrating talent in all young people. On Thursday 9 July the spotlight will be on the Visual Arts. Organisations registering Children's Art Day activities and events will benefit from:

  • Being part of a UK-wide initiative which will receive media coverage
  • Free stickers, balloons and logos to help to promote activities and events
  • Free national publicity through engage, Shine, the Mayor's Office for London and Visit London
  • Ideas for planning activities from engage website and resources

London-based Children's Art Day events registered before 15 May will also automatically be listed in a special Time Out supplement.

The day is a great opportunity for galleries, art centres, museums, schools and other organisations throughout the UK to hold exciting art-based events and activities for children, young people and families - for both new and existing audiences.

We hope that your organisation will be able to participate in Children's Art Day this year, whether through a direct collaboration between a school and gallery, museum or artist on Visual Arts Day, or by working with families over the following weekend. We know how much children and their families value these activities, and look forward to hearing about the events you are planning in celebration of Children's Art Day 2009

Ideas for workshops, activities and events

It is up to you what you decide to do for Children's Art Day, whether it's a two-hour event, or a five-day project - the aim of the day is to involve children and young people (up to age 18) in art activities, whether in a gallery, museum or other cultural centre, or in a school or community group on or around Children's Art Day.

You may wish to organise a celebration event linked to an existing programme/activity, or to organise something especially for the day.

Here are some ideas you might like to consider:

  • Involving a practising artist / artist educator in leading a workshop or activity
  • Giving children or young people the opportunity to see art works first-hand in a gallery or public space
  • Could your activity link to a particular exhibition or artwork?
  • Which media are most appropriate to the age groups you wish to work with? For example: drawing, sculpture, photography, film, painting, digital technology or crafts such as knitting or glass blowing!
  • Will you work with a particular group of children or young people, or will it be an open event for families, or young people and carers?
  • If you want to offer a workshop to a school, check with the teacher to see what is the best timing and subject matter for that year group or class. Think about possible links with the National Curriculum or particular subject areas like Art & Design, Citizenship or History. See http://curriculum.qca.org.uk/ for more information about the curriculum in England.
  • Consider the needs of the participants when planning an event in terms of timings, access, and the levels of support they will need.
  • Make sure you have taken into account Health and Safety and Risk Assessment concerns as well as ensuring adequate Child Protection measures. To see the Arts Council England's Keeping Arts Safe guidelines follow this link

Financial Support

This year, the first 150 venues registering events will receive a grant of £50 as seed funding for an event. This can be claimed on the event's completion and on submission of a brief report. If your event is one of the first 150 registered, you will be contacted with further details of how to claim the grant. ** Please note that as there have now been over 150 events registered, funding is no longer available for events in 2009 **

You may also be able to apply for funding via Grants for the Arts from your regional Arts Council (England only), from other Lottery distributors, or from other local sources such as your local council.

All registered organisations will receive publicity materials such as stickers and balloons before their events to help with promotion and to give out to participants.

All London-based Children's Art Day events will automatically be listed in a commissioned Time Out guide and will receive a postcard for young participants outlining opportunities to gain training, education and employment in the visual arts sector.

Children's Art Day will be promoted by engage, Shine, the Greater London Authority and through Kids Love London.
