What is engage Cymru?
engage Cymru's flagship project was Opt for Art,
initiated in and for Wales. This successful five-year project brought nearly
20,000 young people into contact with art and artists in the gallery context
and in school, with the aim of inspiring them to consider Art as a GCSE option.
Projects involved at least 18 different galleries and arts organisations, and
over 100 different schools across the breadth of Wales. The Opt for Art publication
was launched by Jenny Randerson, ex-Minister for Culture, Sport and the Welsh
Language at the National Museum, Cardiff in November 2002. See
publications database for more details.
engage Cymru has been successful in attracting
project funding from Arts Council of Wales since 1995. engage
Cymru has now established itself as the leading membership organisation for
gallery education in Wales and has over 70 members, including galley and museum
educators, teachers, local authority officers and artists. engage
Cymru promotes gallery education through advocacy, regular area group meetings,
networking and professional development training events as well as an annual
conference and research projects.
Members are updated on news and engage events
through a regular bilingual e-bulletin and through networking and training

Eductor Locator
Following consultation with engage Council and freelance members, Educator Locator is being revamped with a new web address - www.educatorlocator.org.
Freelance members, whether artists, consultants, educators or teachers, can add details to the database via the login page. This takes about 10 minutes and is a great way to 'sell' yourself to schools, galleries and other organisations.
From August, a new facility will be added to the site - Freelance Opportunities. Members will be able to advertise for freelance members for FREE. Unlike the Job Listing section of the website which generally lists salaried positions, Freelance Opportunities is specially designed for short term contracts. This will allow galleries to find educators for one week projects or schools to find artists for one-off commissions.
Further details will be available from the beginning of August in the new Jobs and Careers section of the website. In the meantime, contact
jack.fortescue@engage.org if you have any questions.

recent activities
During Autumn term 2007, engage Cymru has been
working in partnership with three local authorities across Wales exploring what
galleries and artists can offer 3 - 5 year olds in nursery settings and how
they can help deliver the Foundation Phase (new curriculum for 3 - 7 year
olds). We have also recently delivered 3 professional development seminars
'Galleries and the Curriculum Cymreig'.
future plans
A summary report will be published early in 2008 following the research
projects with Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Wrexham. Detailed case studies
from these projects will appear on the engage Cymru
web page shortly. During Autumn term 2008, engage Cymru
will work in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council and Flintshire
County Council on two further early years research projects. In addition,
engage Cymru will be developing three further professional
development seminars for May/June 2008 focusing on the role of galleries and
artists in helping to deliver the Foundation Phase in Wales. Further details to
follow shortly.
