Interpretations
|
 |
Interpretations is an action research project investigating the role of
interpretation in breaking down barriers to access to contemporary visual art.
Interpretations is operated by engage Scotland and
is supported by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council and by
the Hugh Fraser Foundation
Four galleries across Scotland are involved in this exciting project which are
likely to evolve and develop, perhaps becoming something quite different from
the original proposal. This page will be updated as new information is
available.

To explore new ways in which we can relate to our audiences, and in particular
how we can provide them with a richer context in which they can engage with our
programming.
Specifically we aim to establish a new Core Panel of Interpreters, made up of
staff, current attendees and those from diverse backgrounds to work with a
highly skilled interpreter to devise new collaborative and multi-modal
approaches to interpre-text and audio interpretation. The outcomes of this
process will be available for use by all our audiences.
The outcomes will not be limited to the gallery but include web-based presence
enabling broader interactive forums and evaluation to develop.

DCA is moving towards adopting a more collaborative approach to the curation
and interpretation of its contemporary art programme (see DCA objective 2 'To
create clear pathways for people to engage with contemporary visual culture').
This will involve all aspects of the organisation but will rely heavily upon
the effective engagement of visitors by staff working in the invigilation role
(called Gallery Assistants at DCA).
The project will involve the team working with a range of audiences, supported
and facilitated by both the DCA Exhibitions staff and the DCA Community &
Education staff, to collaboratively develop and test new interpretation
resources for DCA Level 4 (entrance orientation area, Front Desk, Information
Room, exhibition galleries).
From this experience gallery staff will be more adequately equipped to identify
and operate effective strategies that engage visitors in the gallery.

Our project will look at issues involved in maintaining a local audience within
the context of our permanent Collection and temporary exhibitions programme and
investigate solutions through interpretative approaches, including traditional
methods and new technology, these will include text, spoken word, practical and
contextual workshops and events.

Talbot Rice Mate is a project for young people that will explore the most
creative and innovative means of communicating about contemporary visual art.
Young people will be directly involved in the production of interpretive
materials, education events and web activity for the gallery's dynamic
exhibition programme.
The content and format will be designed by the young people for young people
and might include short films, interviews, web logs, pod casts and events.
Talbot Rice Mate will bring together young people, artists, gallery staff and
University research colleagues in a creative collaboration generating fresh
perspectives and understanding.
