What is ‘Look Out London’?

As part of Children's Art Day 2010, a new competition was created to celebrate the creativity of children and young people in schools throughout London.

The theme this year was 'Look Out London'. We wanted to see visual work by groups and individuals, showing they have been looking at spaces and places in London in new ways. Pupils could:

  • be inspired by artists or artworks, streets or buildings to look again and to see places in fresh ways
  • watch how a particular place is changing over time
  • look into the future and imagine how places could be different
  • look out for others, thinking about where and how we all live together.

We were pleased see groups getting out further a field, working with galleries, and looking at art and buildings around London. Alternatively you could explore your school and locality in creative ways. Working with an artist on either of these is welcomed.

About Children's Art Day and the Big Draw

Children's Art Day
Children's Art Day is the UK-wide programme encouraging children, young people, families and teachers to engage with the visual arts. Events took place during the week 12-18 July 2010, aimed at under 19s and/or families. For more on Children's Art Day, visit www.childrensartday.org.uk.

The Big Draw
Look Out London prizes donated by Cass Art and Daler-Rowney were presented by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, at a Big Draw event on London's south bank on 22 October 2010. The Big Draw is the Campaign for Drawing's annual month-long season of drawing events for people of all ages and abilities. Over 1000 venues use drawing, painting and a vast range of other media to connect visitors with museum and gallery collections, urban and rural spaces - and the wider community - in new and enjoyable ways.
