Diversity and Citizenship Conference
May 2003, Tate Modern (162 participants)
This day conference explored questions about museums' and galleries' roles in
exploring diversity and addressing schools' new Citizenship curriculum:
-
how can museums and galleries embrace and explore different cultural
perspectives?
- how do schools explore issues of cultural diversity in the new
Citizenship curriculum?
- how might museums and galleries work with schools on
diversity and Citizenship?
The conference aimed to: help delegates develop their thinking about issues of
culture, identity, diversity, as relevant to museums, galleries, and schools;
present specific examples of school/museum/gallery projects addressing
diversity; inform participants about current and new potential in schools'
Citizenship studies; discuss and identify good practice.
The day included keynote presentations, case studies and panel sessions with
input from teachers, museum and gallery educators and policy makers.
Speakers included Professor Lola Young, Head of Culture, Greater London
Authority, Dr Robert Berkeley, Senior Policy Analyst, Runnymede Trust, Stella
Dadzi, Citizenship Advisor, DfES and the Galleries of Justice, Nottingham
Project.
