Diversity and Citizenship Seminars across England
May 2003 (130 participants)
A series of "twilight" seminars aimed primarily at teachers, museum/gallery
professionals and citizenship co-ordinators, exploring the potential of museums
and galleries for schools exploring issues of diversity and addressing the new
Citizenship curriculum. The seminars aimed to:

help develop participants' thinking about issues of culture, diversity,
citizenship, as relevant to museums, galleries, and schools;
- offer examples
or appropriate experience of school/museum/gallery projects addressing
diversity and Citizenship;
- encourage participants to explore future provision
and possible collaborations.
The seminars were part of a series of events for Museums and Galleries Month
addressing the new Citizenship curriculum for schools, and how museum and
gallery resources can help schools engage with diversity and other Citizenship
objectives.
Each seminar included teachers and educators. Speakers contributing to the
different events included: Claire Ackroyd, Cartwright Hall Museum and Art
Gallery; Oliver Buckley, New Art Gallery Walsall; Tim Desmond/Nadeem Haider,
National Centre for Citizenship and the Law, Galleries of Justice; Dr Katherine
Hann, British Empire and Commonwealth Museum; Lisa McLeod/Edson Burton, KUUMBA.
