Artists Working with Galleries and Their Audiences Seminar

DCA, Dundee, 26 March 2009

This seminar was an opportunity to hear from people involved in several recent projects in the visual arts in Scotland with the aim of looking at how galleries and other arts organisations have been working with artists to deliver projects for their audiences.

Speakers explored what motivates galleries and artists to work in this way and discussed whether these motivations are always the same - and whether that matters.

The projects under discussion were:

• Recreate – Maria Harper and artist, Caroline Douglas, discussed this project for Stills, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and Edinburgh Printmakers.

• Parallel Lives, National Galleries of Scotland - Robin Baillie and Richie Cumming and an artist who was involved in the project, discussed Parallel Lives and the issues that have emerged for NGS through working with audiences and artists in this way.

• Praktika/Visual Arts Residency at Callendar House, Falkirk Alex Hetherington and Janie Nicoll will reflected on their experience of the Praktika critical workshop for artists involved in socially engaged art practice at Deveron Arts in Huntly as well as their year as Artists in Residence at Callendar House, Falkirk.
