Supporting Young People's Participation in Galleries and the Arts
Wednesday 26 November 2008 The Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling
Since 2003 engage's envision project has supported galleries in England to engage with young people: sharing ideas, expertise, and resources,
and creating opportunities for young people to have a genuine role in shaping gallery practice, policy, and environment.
This seminar was an opportunity to discuss the findings of envision and look at supporting young people's participation in galleries and the arts in Scotland.
We heard presentations from a gallery that was involved in the envision programme in England alongside case study examples from arts organisations
working with young people in gallery education and youth arts settings in Scotland. Young people from Macrobert in Stirling were involved in the presentations.
The speakers were:
- Rachel Massey, freelance Consultant/artist who gave a summary of envision's 5 year programme in England and a case study of Scarborough
Art Gallery's Young Vision Project
- Liz Conacher, Perth & Kinross Council Arts Development Service
- Macrobert Young Consultants and Lissa Lorenzo, Head of Education, Macrobert, Stirling
- Iseult Timmermans, Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow
The seminar was facilitated by Johnny Gailey, Children and Young People's Programme Manager, The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh.
Participants received a free copy of the envision handbook which is a resource for people working in gallery education or youth arts settings.
It provides advice, information, and inspiration to get started, refresh knowledge, or improve practice working with young people.
The Changing Room is Stirling's only dedicated gallery for contemporary art. Since opening its doors in 1997, the gallery has become an integral
and important part of the growing network of organisations within Scotland and abroad. It provides a link between artists and audience in the area.
