Applications are now open for the Extend Leadership Programme 2019–20

Deadline for applications: 10am, Monday 8 April 2019

Applications are invited from colleagues working in learning and education roles in the arts and cultural sectors to participate in the Extend Leadership Programme 2019–2020. Now in its ninth year, over 100 colleagues have graduated from the Programme from across the arts and cultural sectors.

What is Extend?
Extend was developed in response to the under-representation of learning and education staff in the arts and cultural sectors. The pilot programme was funded by the Cultural Leadership Programme and Creative Scotland; subsequent programmes have been funded by Arts Council England, Creative Scotland and the Arts Council of Wales.

Engage is actively committed to promoting equality and diversity. Through Extend, we aim to develop future leaders in the arts and cultural sectors who reflect the diversity of the UK.

A leadership development programme for mid-career colleagues working in education and learning roles in the arts and cultural sectors, Extend aims to:

  1. Support mid-career education and learning colleagues within the arts and cultural sectors to progress on their own terms, in order to assume leadership roles and responsibilities.
  2. Enhance the experiences of audiences and participants by increasing the influence of education and learning colleagues in strategic development and programming in the arts and cultural sectors.
  3. Encourage a diverse range of applicants to Extend and to contribute to increasing the diversity of leadership in the arts and cultural sectors.
  4. Interrogate and evaluate whether education and learning colleagues in the arts and cultural sector bring specific attributes, qualities or skills which contribute to leadership in the sector.
  5. Increase the ambition and impact of education and learning colleagues in broadening access to the arts.
  6. Explore and develop new models of leadership for education and learning staff in the arts and cultural sectors.

What can participants expect to get out of Extend?

The Programme enables mid-career professionals to acquire and apply leadership skills, working with a cohort of peers from across England, Wales and Scotland. Through a combination of intensive residentials, opportunities to explore aspects of leadership through group projects, mentoring and personal development planning - participants gain opportunities to explore and reflect upon their current practice, to meet with inspiring leaders in the sector, to develop their own projects, and to plan for the future. Extend is the only leadership programme designed to meet the specific needs of education and learning professionals who aspire to leadership positions in the arts and cultural sectors.

Who can apply?

The 2019–2020 Extend Leadership Programme will support up to 14 colleagues working in learning and education roles in the arts and cultural sectors who consider themselves to be mid-career and aspire to leadership. It is envisaged that places will be allocated as follows:

  • 10 places will be for candidates resident and working in England, working in the arts, museums, libraries or heritage in either employed or freelance roles – or a combination of both.
  • 3 places will be for candidates resident and working in the creative arts in Scotland.
  • 1 place will be for a candidate resident and working in the creative arts in Wales.
