Connecting the Conversation

Connecting the Conversation creates an opportunity to hear from people and organisations adopting different approaches to visual arts engagement and ways of collaborating with their local audiences. Speakers confirmed are:

Claire Pounder, Learning Curator, MIMA has worked for museums and galleries for over eight years all of which have been exciting and unpredictable. In Claire’s own words, “that’s what makes my role so interesting – no two days are the same.” Claire will discuss MIMA’s approach to engagement including their weekly Community Day which involves various creative and discursive activities throughout the day aimed at a wide audience.

Paul Stewart is an artist and researcher based at Teesside University. https://paulstewart.org.uk/work/alternative-art-college/ Paul is a lecturer in Fine Art and has completed a practice-based PhD investigating the effects of neoliberalism on Higher Education structures and Critical Pedagogy as a methodology in art making. He recently curated the Middlesbrough Art Weekender. Paul will discuss his practice and plans for Art Weekender going forward. https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/whats-on/arts-culture-news/art-weekender-kicks-mima-special-13064437 His other research interests include digital communities in art making and the effects of digital making on curation and collection processes. He is researching the role digital tools can have on creative opportunities for collaboration in art making for Creative Fuse.

There are additional slots available for those attending to deliver a 5 minute lightning talk fitting the theme of the session or to share a recent project you have been working on. Please contact Val Tobiass on Val Tobiass val.tobiass@maltingsberwick.co.uk in advance if you would like to present a project.

Talks will be followed by time for informal networking and refreshments. The meeting is an opportunity for all colleagues working in galleries, museums and education to catch up, network and help plan future events. Teas and coffees will be provided.
